# Rad Winds
A physics-driven wind energy sandbox & mission system. Build wind farms, design composite blade layups with live feedback, climb real turbines on immersive inspections, and watch your wind farms evolve — all grounded in real aerodynamics, structural dynamics, and based on real life wind energy adventures.

## What It Is
Rad Winds is a dual-mode wind energy simulator:
**Sandbox Mode:** Design wind farms, author gusts that propagate in real-time, optimize blade layups with live feedback, and experiment with turbine physics. Weapons, walking/drivable/shootable turbines, creative chaos, and peaceful animals & weather create scenic scenes.
**Mission Mode:** Execute wind turbine adventures & challenges. Climb real looking turbines, navigate hazards (lightning, high wind VIV events), and complete maintenance procedures grounded in real wind energy practices. Missions scale from beginner (learn controls) to advanced (emergency shutdown procedures) & more! Discover science fiction mixed in with reality!
### The Physics Engine
Every calculation is physically grounded:
- **Aerodynamics:** Blade-Element Method, wake deficits, yaw deflection, vortex particle airflow
- **Structures:** Classical Laminate Theory (CLT) for composite blade design, panel frequency analysis, fatigue accumulation
- **Dynamics:** Multi-Body-Dynamics (MBDyn) for turbine motion, rotor spin-up, structural oscillation
- **Control:** Real pitch control algorithms, wind governor logic, power curve optimization
Started as a visualization layer on the research-grade Co-Blade pipeline; now a fully immersive learning + creative sandbox.
### The Creative Side
- **Animals roam the terrain** (low-poly deer, fish, geese, ducks, penguins) with emergent behaviors — directed by our nine-year-old daughter artist
- **Mutant/Drivable Walker Mode:** Turn turbines into walking/driving contraptions on tower-segment legs or tank tracks? Will it work or crash?
- **Wake Combat:** Yaw a turbine to steer its wake onto downstream targets (wake expansion viz)
- **Original Soundtrack:** Completely original music by the Co-Blade designer
- **Player & Animals are immune to harm** — only turbines can be damaged, maintaining focus on wind energy mechanics and safety

## Features (v0.1.x-alpha)
### Sandbox Tools
**Weather Editor (T):** Author gusts, direction shifts, and lulls on a timeline. Watch them propagate through the farm in 2D top-down schematic view with upstream injection plane visualization.
**Blade Designer (F2):** Drag-drop composite ply editor with 6 materials. See E_eff, mass, cost, and panel frequency update in real time as you refine layups — instant feedback for design iteration.
**Condition Monitoring (F3):** Three-tier vibration analysis per turbine:
- Beam mode frequency trending
- Panel frequency drop detection (delamination early warning)
- Kurtosis-based crack detection
**Technology Tree (G):** Research points from power generation unlock features across three eras, guiding progression.
**Mutant Walker (F4):** Convert any turbine into a walking or driving machine on tower-segment legs. Physics-based step frequency determines stability (too fast = topple).
**Wake Combat:** Yaw to steer red-beam wakes onto neighboring turbines for strategic wind farm conflicts.
### Mission System (NEW)
**Immersive First-Person Climbing:** Climb real turbines with head tracking parallax (TrackIR/webcam support) for depth perception and presence.
**Teacher-Authored Missions:** Educators create custom wind turbine scenarios in Lua without code:
- Define wind profiles, turbine specs, success criteria
- Write NPC dialogue and mission branching
- Customize hazards (lightning warnings, high wind VIV, rotor spin-up events)
- Deploy instantly — no engine recompilation needed
**Example Missions:**
- **End-of-Warranty Inspection:** Climb turbine, inspect 10 components, complete documentation before a storm closes the site
- **Pitch Control 101:** Maintain 80% power in variable wind — learn why pitch angle matters
- **Emergency Shutdown:** Respond to extreme weather with real safety procedures
- **Power Curve Optimization:** Find the sweet spot for maximum efficiency
**Dynamic Hazards:** Lightning warnings (seek shelter), high wind events (movement slowed, tower vibration), rotor spin-up (blades rotating—get back inside!), equipment failures (adapt with missing tools).
**NPC Companions:** Boss Woman (supervisor) briefs missions; Old Grumpy Man also boss character but more comedic relief, (sidekick technician) provides comic relief, helpful hints, and encouragement throughout climbs. More characters and multiplayer will be possible.
**Success Metrics:** Complete missions by finding inspection points, solving challenges, or reaching objectives before time expires or hazards force evacuation.
